Our Lady in Red is now a certified Therapy Dog!!
OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) Months of training have resulted in the official designation of "Certified Therapy Dog" for Calie Robertson of Oklahoma City, OK. Known also as "Our Lady in Red" in the AKC dog world, she successfully passed Monday night the many requirements of the Therapy Dog International organization. Accepting a friendly stranger, sitting politely for brushing and petting, walking (heeling) on a loose leash, sit and down on command, staying in place, coming when called, supervised separation, and not reacting to distractions (especially wheel-c hairs and walkers) represent several of the main elements of current TDI requirements.
Tammy Robertson, Calie's trainer and Mom, was spotted running deliriously in the parking lot after the test. "Daily 5am and 5pm Dog Park workouts, confronting total strangers at the Home Depot requesting dog hugs, finding doggie treats in every load of laundry for the past 6 months, and too often reciting "Sit, Stay, Down" to my confused hair care clients - its been quite the challenge these past several months," stated Tammy matter-of-factly after the successful TDI tests.
Taking on the role of weekend obedience Coach, Calie's Dad, Jim Robertson, did his best Vince Lombardi imitation, barking out instructions inside and out of local PET SMART stores. Now known by OKC PET SMART personnel as, "that guy who comes in with the good-looking red Golden, but who doesn't ever buy anything", Jim told local reporters "I felt we had a good game plan going into the tests, she was focused, had her game face on, stayed within herself, took one test at a time, came out with everything she had, believed in herself, kept her eyes on Tammy, and despite a couple of questionable officiating calls, we were lucky to come out with a win, er Therapy Dog certificate. She made her parents proud!"
Calie is now eligible to visit nursing homes, hospitals, schools, and any other institutions in need of her canine help!
